EG’s Flour Mill Of Summer Hill Wins Urban Design Award

EG’s The Flour Mill of Summer Hill has been presented the 2019 AILA NSW Landscape Architecture Award for Urban Design.

The award recognises The Flour Mill as a work of excellence where design, construction management and built outcomes contribute to the overall wellbeing of the urban setting.

Completed in February 2019, the heritage industrial plot has been given new life as a unique, mixed-use site with a lively community of homes, shops, cafes and parklands facilitating social interaction, economic activity, liveability and accessibility.

From the beginning, EG’s development strategy sought to build in good values, focusing first on what’s best for the people who would live, work and access the site in the broader Summer Hill community. With an eye on the future, it was also crucial to preserve the significant past of the place as an icon of the Inner West.

Across the 11 buildings on site, many have retained, reused or adapted the existing buildings, including conversion of the concrete, circular wheat silos into the premium Durum Silo apartments. The central Mungo Scott Plaza now hosts the annual Grain’s Festival, Australia’s first festival dedicated to grains – from bread to beer.

In conjunction with joint-venture partners, Daiwa House Australia and Cosmos Australia, EG would like to thank the architecture team at HASSELL Studio and the team of heritage consultants for sharing our vision to bring new heart to an old soul.

It is an honour to have this people-first place recognised for its’ legacy as a state-wide benchmark for urban living. Congratulations to the EG Developments team and to the other category finalists!
